Tasmania , Hobart day 1

Drove down to Port Arthur today - old penal colony. Beautiful scenery on the way down, Tadman Arch & Devils Kitchen. Also visited Tasmanian Devils Unzoo, did not hear them screaming. Apparently that is one of the reasons for their name, the awful tacket they make. They eat carrion. They help clean up the roadkill and there us quite a lot of that, mainly wallebies. Its sad yo see so many beautiful animals dead on the road. They come out mostly at night and are hit by cars. Given that the roads here are so quiet, there must be a lot if walkebies hidden in the bushes!
Port Arthur is deserted today except for tourists. It was a thriving penal colony until deportation was stopped around 1850's. Kids from 9 years old could be deported! They had a separate island fir the boys where they were taught basic skills. There was also a separate "Isle of the Dead". Some of tge treatment was very harsh - 100 lashes for trying to escape. There were also some political prisoners, the keaders of the Young Ireland rebellion were there and English Charterists. Its so peaceful now on a warm summer's day but must have witnessed so much horror.
