Wineglass Bay

Yesterday we drove from Hobart through Ross & Campbell Town towards Freycinet national park & Wineglass Bay. There was the remains of a prison for women convicts in Ross but as there was also a notice at the site saying that snakes were active in the area, we decided to skip an indepth visit. Ate more fish & chips - its hard to get away from it here. There was also a bridge built by convicts with top layer of stones standing up called the Spikey Bridge that was considered a tourist attraction - have not figured out why!
Anyway, on Monday we headed up to the national park and the hike to Wineglass Bay. That was some hike - you needed to be as surefooted as a mountain goat and have the stamina of an ox! However, we did get down to the beach & back, it took about 4 hours of hard bush-walking. I began to resent people who could carry on a conversation while clambering up or down the mountain at the same time. We were knackered. The views were amazing and worth the thousands of calories expended.
On another topic, there is very little traffic but a high amount of roadkill (mainly wallaby) on the roads here. It happens mainly in the evening when large numbers of wallaby must hit the roads -sorry about the pun.

Wineglass Bay sounds like my kind of place! Sounds as though you needed to fill one up after all that physical activity! It looks like a very remote place. Convicts must have wondered where they were. -

Yeah...All those "new" countries are chock-full of ghosts. I sometimes felt them brushing right past my elbow in Canada, thought I saw their shadows down by the meeting points on the rivers.
Sounds like an epic hike! Start of things to come maybe? We both love having your news and admire you for getting up and going on this adventure.
Have you got The Songlines by Bruce Chatwin with you? Something by Patrick White? I've dreamed Australia with people like those and am definitely going to check out that continent some day!
